A Year with the Bible
Dear Friends
Welcome to the Bible reading group! I find the discipline of reading the Bible through to be an adventure. It is a spiritual discipline that for a year gives shape to my life and different meaning to my days. It calls me back to immersion in the ongoing story of God. It gives me an opportunity to see the big picture of Scripture that I sometimes lose in reading or studying separate passages or books. It is an opportunity to learn afresh who God is and what God does, to learn about myself and find myself in the story of God's people, to learn about community in the people of God.
For 2007, the group, now known as the Ultimate Book Club, plans to read and study the New Testament. The following schedule is set up on a monthly basis, anticipating that you will read six days each week. In a study Bible with many notes, this is approximately 6 pages per day. You may, of course, choose to read any amount that works well for you. You may choose to read once a week or twice a day and still read through the entire New Testament in a year.
But, if you fall off the wagon (the schedule), you can always run ahead and get back on. You will be welcomed by friends who are having their own struggles and successes. Please note the meeting dates listed in the schedule which are always subject to change. Please check with the church to assure the correct date for any month. Study group meetings usually are held the first Tuesday evening of the month in the Parlor at FPC from 6:30-8:00 PM.
Each time I read, I find that I ask different questions. I'd suggest the following questions as a jumping off place. As we become community, our own questions will emerge.
What does this section say about God's being, God's activity in the world, God's relationship with people?
What difference does any of this make to me? Where do I fit into the story of God's people??
What passage/person/issue/concept stood out that I would like to ponder or remember?
I am grateful that you will be sharing this adventure with me. I appreciate the opportunity to talk with and learn from others who are sharing the journey. I look forward to the spiritual growth that we will share with each other.
Peace and love,
