How We Worship - Some Frequently Asked Questions

Do I look OK?

Right. You've walked into a church that people your grandparents' age went to. They wore dresses and stockings and suits and ties. If you look around you'll notice some people still do. Other people are wearing tank tops, golf shirts and sandals. They're all OK. So are you.

What do I do first?

Listen - just relax - because the organ is playing and you can let silence happen inside you to prepare for what God will do there. If you see someone you know, or if someone speaks to you, it's okay to talk. We're not really strict. We just like to get a little time with no too much disturbance to get ready for worship.

When does everything start?

Someone stands up pretty close to ten o'clock to welcome you and make announcements. Everything in the printed order of service will take you from there.

Then what?

Follow the printed order. If there's a hymn number listed, we all will sing that. The hymnal is the blue book in the pew rack. Sing with all you've got - there are no wrong notes at First Presbyterian Church.

Where there's a diamond - ♦ - marked in the order, you stand up if you're able.

Where it says Kyrie, Gloria Patria or Doxology (with a hymn number) we all sing together. You can look them up in the hymnal, or use the printed text in the "How we worship" brochure in the pews. Our version of the Lord's Prayer and the Apostle's Creed are there too.

There are prayers and responsive readings printed in various places that you get to read with everyone else. For the responsive readings, you read the part in bold. The minister or leader will let you know when that's happening.

What about communion?

If you consider yourself a Christian, you are welcome at the table here. Your baptized children can participate, too, if you want them to.

And then?

Join us for coffee hour. We'd love to get to know you.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Gloria Patria

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.

Apostle's Creed (traditional)

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived of the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead and buried;
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven
and sitteth on the right hand
of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
the forgivenes of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen
